Volendam

About Volendam

Volendam is a Dutch town on the Markermeer Lake, northeast of Amsterdam. The town is well known about their traditional costumes, wooden houses, smoked eel, boats and clogs. Nowhere in the Netherlands do so many traditional Dutch traditions come together as in Volendam. You can go to the famous "dike" with many terraces, souvenir shops and a mix of tourists. Get dressed in traditional costumes or explore Volendam by bike. Volendam is also well known for its music, which is called "Palingsound" (literally "eel sound") in reference to Volendam's status as a fishing village. They even have their own dialect!
