Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and lies on the Nieuwe Maas River, a branch of the Rhine. The city is known as one of the world's largest ports and is often called "the gateway to Europe." Thanks to its coastal location, Rotterdam has been an important center for trade, shipping, and industry for centuries.

On May 14, 1940, Rotterdam was heavily bombed by the German air force. The historic city center was almost completely destroyed. More than 25,000 houses were lost, and nearly 900 people were killed. Instead of rebuilding the old city, Rotterdam chose to start anew. The city designed a modern street plan with wide roads, open squares, and space for new architecture. This decision gave Rotterdam its unique, modern appearance.

Today, Rotterdam is known worldwide for its modern architecture. Buildings such as the Erasmus Bridge, the Markthal, the Kijk-Kubus houses, and the Rotterdam Tower demonstrate the city's innovation. Rotterdam is a city of experimentation and innovation—constantly evolving, with a skyline that continues to grow.

Besides its modern appearance, Rotterdam also boasts charming historic locations like Delfshaven, where old warehouses and canals can still be seen.
